West Bay Rotary Grant
In recognition of their vital role for those in need here in Midcoast Maine, 10 local charities were awarded grants from West Bay Rotary this week. As an integral part of its mission, the club hosts fundraising events throughout the year to support qualified charitable causes.
Seascale Maine
The Atlantic sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) is commercially fished and farmed in the state of Maine. The fishery was valued at over $8.7 million in 2022, with projected room for growth. Seascale has developed an innovative scallop pot that uses existing lobster gear tech to optimize scallop production. Learn about their unique invention and the scallop industry.
Maine Birding Trail
Maine has a long, rugged coastline and vast forests that outspan any other state’s. You can see lots of seabirds and terrestrial birds, if you know where to go. In our first Cabin Fever Series lecture of the 2025-2026 season we will learn about the Maine Birding Trail and the birds you can see across Maine. The Sturgeon Bride Project
This project was made possible by a Connecting Learning Grant from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute allowing the Herring Gut team to integrate climate science education, NASA data visualization tools, and forge a partnership with eighth-grade students at St. George Municipal School Unit, led by teacher Alison England.
Resiliency Forum
Sarah Oktay, PhD, Herring Gut Coastal Science Center's Executive Director, is a member of a working group organized between South Thomaston and St. George. Members of their respective Coastal Resilience Committees have organized two forum opportunities, October 1 and 2, to contribute to the Community Action Plan for Climate Resiliency..
