Summer is a great time to explore the Maine coast and learn about marine ecology.

Herring Gut presents a series of fun and informative, hands-on activities year-round to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.  Programs are free and open to children (and adults!) of all ages!

The Curious World of Seaweed

Where Science and Art Converge: Join us for a special preview of author Josie Iselin’s soon to be released book, The Curious World of Seaweed. Make your own seaweed mini-pressing as you explore this magnificent product of the sea. Josie will dive deep into the life history and the history of the science of a few iconic kelps and seaweeds. Herring Gut Learning Center educators will also be providing tools and supplies for seaweed pressings for attendees to experiment with after Josie’s talk. 6:30 PM

Bioluminescence of the Sea

Learn about the chemical process and purpose of bioluminescence within our local waters. HGLC educators lead this exploratory evening. If conditions are right, Muscongus Bay waters at Port Clyde may be aglow! 7:00 PM

Evening Beach Walk

Enjoy a guided walk along Drift Inn Beach in Port Clyde. HGLC educators will point out what makes up this tidal zone of the Muscongus Bay. Come and see what sea creatures and more are hanging out at the beach after the tide goes out! 7:00 PM
