During the hot summer months of June, July and August of 2018, twenty middle and high school students completed a job experience at Herring Gut Learning Center in our First Work Program. First Work is just what it says: experience in a first (or sometimes second) year job.

Students wanting to participate in this program completed applications, interviewed, filled out necessary employment forms and found a ride to work. They tended the complex aquaponic system used to grow vegetables and herbs in our greenhouse as well as caring for the raised bed gardens in the yard. Harvesting and selling at the St. George Grange farmer’s market gave them experience in customer interaction, handling sales and even sometimes learning the skill of bartering with other vendors!

These students represented the Herring Gut Learning Center with poise, politeness and dedication. We couldn’t be prouder to have had them as part of the staff this summer!
