Herring Gut Learning Center is pleased to announce that it will host it’s second annual Girls in Science event for 6th grade girls in both RSU 13 and St. George MSU on May 24th and 25th. This will be a day full of hands-on activities, aimed at developing interest in and skills for careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) fields.

Professional female scientists in marine biology, aquaculture and engineering will share their stories of how they became scientists, and teach the students about their expertise through hands-on lessons. Siemens Corporation (http://www.siemens.com) will once again donate wind kits for the students and their own engineers will lead the students in putting them together. This year we are also honored to have a scientific illustrator and wildlife artist joining us to lead activities that teach us how science and art are better together! The event is intended to inspire creativity, exploration, encourage resilience, and show how science can solve problems facing society. This event celebrates pioneering women in scientific fields, as well as local women who do remarkable work.

Herring Gut Learning Center, a non-profit education center in Port Clyde, partners with local schools to present hands-on classes in aquaculture and marine science, offers professional development opportunities for teachers, and presents summer programs for children and the public.
